What You Would Actually Do

This role sits at the intersection of UX/UI, digital strategy, and automotive tech. Your goal is to make the digital ecosystem feel “effortless, engaging, and safe.”

  • End-to-End Design: You will lead complex initiatives across multiple product surfaces. This means creating high-fidelity interactions, visuals, and sometimes sound or motion designs.
  • The Design System: You will contribute to and evolve GM’s overarching design systems so that the experience is scalable and consistent across all platforms.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: You won’t be working in a vacuum. You will partner closely with Product Managers, Engineers, and Researchers in a lean, agile environment.
  • Mentorship & Strategy: As a senior designer, you are expected to mentor peers, champion inclusive design (accessibility), and present your vision to executive stakeholders.

Why Is This a Good Job?

  • The Pay & Perks: A base salary up to $163k is highly competitive. GM also offers a comprehensive benefits package, 401(k), tuition assistance, and the highly coveted GM vehicle discounts.
  • Remote Flexibility: The role is designated as remote, with a catch: if you live within a specific radius of a GM hub (like Detroit or Austin), you will need to go into the office three times a week. Note: They do offer relocation benefits if you want to move.
  • High Impact: You are actively contributing to GM’s massive corporate vision of “Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion” through human-centered design.

Do You Qualify?

GM is looking for a heavy hitter who can jump right in.

The Requirements:

  1. Experience: You need 5+ years of professional experience in UX, industrial, visual, sound, or motion design. (Having 7+ years in automotive or big tech is a preferred bonus).
  2. The Portfolio: This is absolutely non-negotiable. You must provide a link to an online (or privately hosted) portfolio that proves you understand strategic, human-centered design.
  3. The Tools: You need deep expertise in modern design software, specifically Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and prototyping tools.
  4. Storytelling: You need to be an excellent communicator. You will be presenting your designs to upper-level management, so you have to be able to defend the “why” behind your work.
  5. Education: A Bachelor’s degree in HCI, Visual Communications, or Design (or equivalent real-world experience).
